Irish FM: Ireland Willing to Deepen Relations With China

Irish Foreign Minister Brian Cowen said Thursday that Ireland is willing to strengthen its relations with China.

"We are very anxious to deepen our relations with China as we see it as a great emerging power," Cowen said in an interview with Chinese media after addressing the fourth Asia Europe Young Leaders Symposium which opened Monday in Ireland's midwestern city of Limerick.

"We have excellent relations with China and we hope we can build on this in the future," Cowen said.

"Clearly, in our Asian strategy, we want to make sure that people are aware of the goods and services we can provide and China is very important in that strategy," he said, adding that China is a major player in the Asian region.

"We intend, in the coming months and years, to see what we may exploit the opportunities to our mutual benefit," he said.

Commenting on Taiwan issue, the Irish foreign minister said Ireland is aware of the One-China policy and that the bilateral relations must be based on that principle.
