Cisco Sees an Internet Revolution

The speed of business operations and the embrace of quality talents will become two key factors for Internet companies to advance in the coming five years, a senior Internet player said June 15 in Beijing.

"The Internet is about to change everything from a country level to a company, resulting in new concepts and new business models,'' said John Chambers, president and chief executive officer with Cisco Systems.

"In this revolution, the fast will beat the slow and (the pressure of) survival is driving the Internet economy,'' Chambers told the CEO & CIO Forum in Beijing Thursday.

In the next five years, Chambers predicts that all communications prices will be cheaper and voice and data transmission will be free of charge.

Cisco, one of the leading Internet system providers, has replaced Microsoft as the most valuable company in the world. The company's revenue has soared from US$1.3 billion in 1994 to US$12.2 billion last year.

"The Internet is revolutionizing the productivity and cultivation new business entrepreneurs,'' said Chambers.

He noted that the embrace of quality talents is decisive for Internet companies to survive.

The CEO & CIO Forum attracted over 200 company managers from China's banking, telecom and other industry sectors.

Zhang Qi, director of the computer department with the Ministry of Information Industry, said at the conference that China Internet companies should take the opportunity to learn more and apply more in their business developments.

"It's crucial for Chinese Internet companies to grow up quickly as the competition is becoming really fierce,'' said Zhang.
