Cross Border Efforts Urged to Combat PollutionThe business and Industrial sectors in China's inland areas and Hong Kong were urged to expand the cross-border cooperation to further strengthen environmental improvement projects.With the fast economic growth in the past decades, China is placing more emphasis on environmental issues, as the demands placed on the environment are gradually increasing. Through mutual efforts, the inland areas' environmental market could be further developed, thus contributing to the improvement of China's environment and protection of the global environment, Wang added. According to Wang, between 1991 and 1995, foreign capital used on environment projects amounted to 1.117 billion U.S. dollars and the figure between 1996 to 2000 is expected to reach 4 billion U.S. dollars. Denise Yue, acting financial secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, said at the conference that the participation of multinational corporation would no doubt accelerate the engine for international cooperation. More than 200 environmental officials and business executives from the inland areas and Hong Kong attended the 9th annual business and industry environment conference, which is organized by the Private Sector Committee on the Environment. This year's conference will focus on the financing of environmental business and the achieving of cross-border cooperation. |
