Siemens Secures 50-mln-euro Contract for Mobile Phone Network in China

Siemens has won a contract worth more than 50 million euros (48 million dollars) to expand the GSM mobile phone network of China's second-biggest telecommunications operator, China Unicom, the German engineering giant said on Thursday in Munich.

Siemens will act as the main supplier of GSM network components to China Unicom and expand the capacity of its mobile network in Heilongjiang province, the German company said in a statement.

The expansion of the network would be completed in the third quarter of this year.

China Unicom expanded its share of the Chinese mobile phone market last year to 11 percent from five percent previously.
