China's revenue from road transportation reached 385 billion yuan in 1999, accounting for 4.3 percent of that year's GDP.

According to an official with the Ministry of Communications, highway traffic has become a main means of transportation which registers the largest transport volume and earns the highest business income among the five transport services, namely, highway, railway, waterway, civil aviation and pipeline, and has made great contribution to promoting the development of the national economy.

It's reported that after the founding of New China, road transportation started from a poor and blank base, but it has entered the stage of rapid development since the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). Statistics show that by the end of 1993, the country's road transport service had about 5.38 million operating vehicles, including1.21 million passenger cars and 4.17 trucks.
