Baby-killer Virus Strikes Again in Taiwan

A total of 13 people have died this year from enterovirus, which killed dozens of children last year, Taiwan's "Department of Health (DOH)" said Thursday, according to report of China Daily.

"Statistics suggest kids aged under three were most at risk," said DOH spokesman Hsu Kuo-hsiung. "Although the threat has somewhat been eased, the risk is still there."

Symptons of the intestinal virus include fever, a rash, and ulcers in the mouth and on the feet and hands.

In a breakdown of the latest deaths, the DOH said six were reported in northern Taiwan and seven in the southern part of the island.

Hsu urged parents to heighten their vigilance against the disease, which claimed 57 lives last year and infected 812.

Doctors estimated at least 200,000 children had contracted the virus last year. In most cases the virus is not fatal.
