Nature Reserve in Source of Major Chinese RiversChina will soon establish a large nature reserve in Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province. The nature reserve will protect the ecology, wild animals and plants, and ensure sufficient water supply in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. "We should have an overall plan for the nature reserve," said Liu Jiyuan, director of the Institute of Geographical Sciences and Natural Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. "A few zones under key protection should be set up in important sections of the Yellow River," he added. The environment has worsened in Yushu prefecture, causing the loss of grasslands, desertification in some areas, and the illegal hunting of rare animals. "The protection of the source of the three rivers, namely the Yangtze River, the Yellow River and the Lancang River, is conducive to the development of western China, guaranteeing the growth of national economy and the living quality of people in southeast Asia," said Chen Jianwei, deputy director of the Protection Department of the State Forestry Administration. The Lancang river originates in the Tangula Mountain in Qinghai and is named Mekong after it enters into Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia.
