Chinese Market Exciting: CDMA LeaderQualcomm Incorporated, the pioneer and world leader of CDMA technology, has expressed interest in the fast growing Chinese market."The Chinese market is already very exciting, it is growing very rapidly and it will continue to grow rapidly," said Irwin Jacobs, chairman and chief executive officer of Qualcomm who is attending the 5th Annual CDMA Congress in Beijing from June 12 to 15. "Use of wireless Internet access in China is increasing, and for people's business, education, leisure, there will be more and more use of internet," the chief executive said Wednesday. "I believed that much of the usage will be wireless, which will surely cause the business to grow even faster than it is already growing which is rapidly," he said. Qualcomm, the San Diego-based wireless company which owns more than 10000 CDMA patents, is actively pushing its CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access technology in China, according to Jacobs. Qualcomm's China expansion plans centered on China Unicom, the second largest telecommunications provider in China, which has been solely authorized by the Chinese government to construct and operate a CDMA network in the country. Earlier this week, China Unicom confirmed that it would use CDMA20001x, the third generation CDMA technology developed by Qualcomm for its next generation mobile phone systems and the trials would begin next year. "Qualcomm will help China Unicom with information about how the technology is evolving and how they will be able to start their networks, and any other help they wish, " Jacobs said. On research and development side, Jacobs said his company is focusing on helping Chinese manufacturers build equipment and infrastructure. At present stage, much of Qualcomm's activities in China will be with Chinese manufacturers, he said. Those activities include helping Chinese manufacturers understand "how to build the equipment that operate with CDMA and easily evolve to the third generation that will be commercial this year." Focusing on local CDMA production, Qualcomm has signed research and development deals with eight leading Chinese equipment manufacturers. As licensees of Qualcomm, those companies are expected to develop CDMA handsets and infrastructure prototypes based on IS-95 A/B and 3G cdma20001x standard. CDMA, a continuous digital transmission technology, is traditionally a U.S. technology, but a lot of its first-class technologies have been put into use in Asia, primarily in South Korea and Japan. The 3G CDMA technology, or cdma20001x, is entering the Asian market with a 3G CDMA system expected to be commercially available by the year end in South Korea. Compared with second generation GSM and CDMA network, the 3G Telecom system will enable much faster wireless transfer rate than current systems for things such as video images and other multimedia
