Education is the key to the development of Hong Kong into a knowledge-based economy and to its long-term competitiveness, said Tung Chee Hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Thursday.

Tung make the remarks when he hosted a lunch for the Heads of the Universities Committee Thursday at Government House.

Tung said that education reform is a long-term undertaking and that many initiatives, although supported by the community, must be implemented step by step.

He said that good education is the collective responsibility of the entire community. "We looked to the community to show commitment, make contributions and to embrace the changes," he added.

Those who attended the luncheon were heads of eight Hong Kong- based universities, including the City University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
