North China Is Hard Hit by Drought

News from the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought-Relief Headquarters says that days of hot weather have worsened the drought in most parts to the north of the Yellow River.

Since the beginning of this June, a hot and dry weather has continued in most parts to the north of the Yellow River, with the temperature standing as high as 34¡æ to 38¡æ in north China and northwest China and thus aggravating the drought in these regions. Meanwhile, there have been excessive rainfalls in most parts of south China. Drought has been effectively alleviated in Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality.

According to statistics by the end of June 13, about 216 million mu (1 hectare = 15 mu) of crops were hit by drought, 45.5 million mu of fields were in lack of water for sowing, 16.2 million people and 13.7 million livestock had difficulty in getting drinking water.
