China to Have More Laws on Environment ProtectionChina's top legislature will pass a package of laws and regulations in the coming years to protect the environment while developing economy, the English-language newspaper China Daily reported today.The seven draft laws and regulations cover the evaluations of environmental influences, limiting sandstorms and desertification, cleaner production processes, controlling pollutant discharges, limiting pollution from automobiles and licensing the disposal of hazardous wastes. The new laws will supplement the nation's 19 environmental laws and 123 administrative regulations on environmental and resources protection formulated by the State Council, said Sun Youhai, an official of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress. Despite the push for the new laws, Chris Van Lint, general manager of the Regulatory Affairs Department of Bayer China Co. Ltd. said that China's current environmental laws are of "world standard." The paper said that implementing environmental laws is a central government priority. Thousands of small polluting enterprises have been shut down in recent years. |
