World's First 64-Bit Chinese Linux System Launched

The Cosoft Alliance under China High-Tech Development Program 863 and the Software Institute under the China Academy of Sciences Thursday launched the Chinese Penguin 64, the world's first 64-bit Chinese Linux operational system.

This is the first software product made by Cosoft Alliance, founded in February of this year and consisting of 30 outstanding universities, research bodies, enterprises and specialized media companies.

Li Mingshu, deputy director of the Software Institute, said that Penguin 64 was developed based on the 64-bit hardware platform offered by Singapore Donovan Systems Corporation and represents the latest development of Linux, an English operational system famous for making its source code public.

Experts here noted that operational systems are monopolized by some international software giants, a situation which has greatly hindered the development of China's national software industry. The birth of the Chinese Penguin 64 will help break the monopoly and give a chance for China's software makers to show off their talent, experts said.

"Penguin 64 is expected to become a new computing standard for Chinese governments and enterprises, because its source code will be publicized and clients can use it freely according to their own needs," Li said.
