Xinhua President Passes awayGuo Chaoren, president of Xinhua News Agency, passed away from illness at 9:05 am Thursday in Beijing. He was 66.Guo, also a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, was born in October 1934, and graduated from Beijing University in 1956. During his 44-year career as a journalist, Guo served as a correspondent in Xinhua branches in the Tibet Autonomous Region and Shaanxi Province, deputy director in the Sichuan branch, and secretary-general and vice-president of the Xinhua headquarters in Beijing. In November 1992, he became president of the news agency. Guo was a prolific writer and published a number of books including "Sprint to the Summit," "Tibet in the Past Decade," " Echo of the Era" and "African Diary." Guo had extensive contacts and exchanges with overseas media. In 1994, he was elected president of the Organization of Asia-Pacific Agencies.
