China is rejoiced over the success of the Inter-Korean Summit and wishes to extend its congratulations on that, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday.

The following is the full text of the statement:

The summit between Kim Jong IL, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and Kim Dae Jung, President of the Republic of Korea, has smoothly concluded thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides. The two sides have enhanced mutual understanding, reached a 5-point consensus on major issues such as independent reunification of the country and issued a joint declaration.

The Chinese side believes that the Pyongyang Summit has produced important results and is thus a major event of historical significance. We are convinced that it will make valuable contribution to the maintenance of peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

The Chinese side has heartily rejoiced over the success of the summit and wishes to extend its congratulations on that. The Chinese side has always maintained that the reunification between the two sides on the Korean Peninsula should be achieved through dialogue and consultation between the parties concerned.

We hope that the two sides will continue to enhance their mutual trust and strengthen their exchanges and cooperation in various fields in the spirit of reconciliation and cooperation so as to create favorable conditions for the final realization of an independent and peaceful reunification on the Peninsula.
