Beijing Enters Sci-tech Era

As things stand with people's governments at all levels, enterprises and social public institutions in Beijing, scientific and technological center of the nation, people have come to show a great zeal for learning science and using hi-tech products. Sci-tech achievements are boosting the economic development of Beijing at a speed never seen before.

This year's Hi-tech Industry Week has drawn closer to a grand international gathering on science and technology. People of Beijing have seized the opportunity and over one million of them visited it. Over two million people took part in the "Science Travel Month" at the same time, and people visited the Zhongguancun Hi-tech Park alone to a total of as many as 1.2 million. Some scientific museums, rarely visited in the past, are now filled with Beijing people. During the May Day holidays this year, about 100 thousand people visited the China Science and Technology Museum every day. At least one out of ten Beijing families have a computer, and Beijing's netizens have exceeded 2 million, accounting for one fourth of the nation©­the scientific quality of Beijing people is being raised obviously.

Scientific advantages and industrialization of technological innovations have guaranteed the rapid development of hi-tech industries and the capital's economy. Hi-tech enterprises newly approved by Zhongguancun Park last year total 1227, nearly two times over the precious year. Statistics show that Beijing hi-tech industries in 1999 gave an output value taking 26.7 percent of its industrial total, 4.3 percent higher over previous year.
