Exhibition on Contemporary Chinese Paintings to Open in HK

An exhibition of oil paintings, sketchings and traditional Chinese paintings will be staged at the Hong Kong Exhibition Center from June 15 to 20 to commemorate the late contemporary Chinese painter Wu Zuren.

The 120 pieces of art works to be on display were selected from about 500 precious paintings produced by Wu in the different stages of his over-60-year artistic life. Wu died just two months before China resumed the exercise of sovereignty of Hong Kong on July 1, 1997.

The exhibition was organized by the Hong Kong-based China Cultural City Limited. This was the second time Wu's works are put on display in Hong Kong.

Born in East China's Jiangsu Province in 1908, Wu began to delve into literature and art in his youth, and later he paid special attention to gathering firsthand experience in life and studied both Chinese and Western painting.

"He deserves the honor of one of the greatest artists in Chinese modern arts history," recalled Hou Yimin, former president of the China's Central Academy of Fine Arts when introducing Wu to Hong Kong people at a press conference.

Starting with Western painting and grasping the true essentials of the visual arts, Wu excelled in oil painting and was accomplished in sketching. He was a versatile artist, well acquainted with Western art of different periods, Hou said.

Wu studied fine arts in France and Belgium in the 1930s, and came back to China in 1935 as professor in the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He served as dean and president of the academy for many years.
