Israel Welcomes Historical Inter-Korea Summit

The Israeli government on Wednesday expressed its welcome to the historical inter-Korea summit held in Pyongyang, saying it is conducive to realizing peace in the Korean Peninsula.

The government of Israel considered the summit between the leaders of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and South Korea a key opportunity for peace, reconciliation and cooperation between the two parts of the peninsula, which has been divided for about 50 years, a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry said.

The government of Israel also hopes that the important achievements of the historical meeting will lead to speedy, complete and comprehensive unification of the peninsula, the statement said.

DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Kim Dae-jung began their historical summit in Pyongyang on Tuesday, and signed a historical agreement on Wednesday to strengthen the exchange and improve the relations between the two sides and to realize national reunification at an early date.

The DPRK and South Korea have agreed to cooperate independently in seeking ways of national reunification, realize mutual visits by delegations of relatives of the separated families, realize balanced development of the national economy through cooperation, and conduct inter-governmental dialogues on the implementation of the agreement.

Also in the agreement, Kim Dae-jung extended an invitation to Kim Jong Il to visit South Korea and Kim Jong Il agreed to make the trip at an appropriate time.
