China Actively Taps New Energy Sources

China is actively developing various new and renewable energy sources focusing on hydropower, solar, wind, geothermal and tidal sources, in the hope to make up for the shortage of conventional energy sources.

According to Hu Chengchun, deputy director of the energy development committee under the China Energy Research Society ( CERS), China enjoys very rich new and renewable energy sources and has huge potential for their further development and use.

He said that China's recoverable hydropower energy sources total 378 million kw, but only 11 percent of them have been tapped. The country has recoverable wind energy sources of 254 million kw, geothermal sources equivalent to 462.6 billion tons of standard coal, and tidal energy sources of more than 20 million kw.

To date, China's annual utilization of new and renewable energy stands at a very low level of 300 million tons of standard coal, as compared with the abundant new and renewable energy sources.
