Chinese Journalists Win Shapiro PrizeFifteen editors and journalists from Xinhua News Agency were awarded the prestigious Shapiro Prize by the Shapiro Journalism Education Foundation in Beijing on Wednesday.The prize was established in honor of Michael Shapiro, a member of the British Communist Party who started working at Xinhua in 1950 at the invitation of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Shapiro spent a total of 36 years copy-editing English stories and doing translation for the Department of Home News for Overseas Service of Xinhua prior to his death in 1986. Late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping had referred to Shapiro as "a staunch international soldier and sincere friend of the Chinese people." The foundation was established by Shapiro's relatives and friends in London to help improve English language reporting in China. Today's award ceremony is the sixth since the initiation of the prize. At the ceremony, prizes were also given to 17 teachers and students at the China School of Journalism. Xinhua's English service was introduced over a half century ago and currently serves thousands of media subscribers around the world. |
