North Xinjiang Builds First Expressway

The first expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is expected to open to traffic on October 1 this year.

The 265.51-kilometer-long expressway, which connects the regional capital Urumqi with Kuytun city, runs through the northern part of Xinjiang where the region's economic development belt is located.

Three economic development zones in Urumqi, Shihezi city and Kuytun city are along the both sides of the expressway.

Construction of the over 5.2 billion yuan (US$626 million) project started on April 1, 1997.

This is the second high-grade highway funded by the World Bank in Xinjiang, a westernmost region in China.
