CPPCC Chairman Meets Noted Figures Attending 21st Century Forum

Li Ruihuan, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), met in Beijing Tuesday with a dozen noted figures who are here to attend a major international forum.

The guests included Botswana former President Ketumile Masire and former Australian Prime Minister John Malcolm Fraser.

Li is also honorary chairman of the organizing committee of the 21st Century Forum -- 2000 Conference, sponsored by the CPPCC National Committee.

Li said that economic globalization is a widely concerned issue across the world. The forum will provide an opportunity for the figures to voice their opinions.

China's economy has gradually been integrated into the world economy in the last twenty years since reforms were initiated. China will play an active role toward economic globalization, he said.

"China pays close attention to the development of economic globalization, and keeps abreast of current changes in the world," Li said. "The country is also striving to implement correct policies and measures on economic globalization."

The chairman said that China wishes economic globalization will bring development to all countries and benefit everyone, and help build a just and rational new world economic order.

The visitors agreed that discussing economic globalization and the future development of Asia and China at the turn of the century is of great significance.

Vice-Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee Song Jian, Secretary-General of the CPPCC National Committee Zheng Wantong, and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee of the CPPCC National Committee Tian Zengpei attended the meeting.
