Regulations Protecting Mangroves Issued in South China CityThe Beihai Municipal People's Government issued a public notice Monday to protect China's largest section of endangered mangrove in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Any commercial development projects in coastal areas with mangrove or within areas planned and suitable for growing mangroves will be prohibited without the approval of governments. Those who destroy mangroves will be punished according to the law. The notice follows recent publicity about destruction of at least 60 hectares of mangroves. Mangroves are one of the most endangered plants in the world. There are 5,654 hectares of mangroves in Guangxi, about 40 percent of mangroves in China. |
