China Starts to Unearth Ancient Imperial Porcelain Kiln

Chinese archaeologists recently started to excavate an ancient imperial porcelain kiln which had produced extremely delicate chinaware in the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127).

Among the five most famous kilns in the dynasty, the Ruguanyao in Baofeng County of central Henan Province produced porcelain pieces which were presented to the court for imperial use about 1, 000 years ago.

The unique technique used by kiln workers was lost during wartime. Experts estimated that the world now has only 60 existing treasures of the kind, each of which is valued at 10 million U.S. dollars, the Shanghai-based Wenhui Daily reported Wednesday.

An expert with the Shanghai Museum accidentally found a piece of delicate porcelain from a local resident and finally found the original site of the Ruguanyao.

Archaeologists have determined that the site covers an area of 250,000 square meters, the newspaper said.
