Average Wage of Urban Staff Hit 8,436 Yuan Last Year
A recent report from the Ministry of Labor and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said that the average wage of the urban workers and staffers reached 8,346 yuan, an actual increase of 13.1 percent over 1999.
The report revealed that the total value of wages for urban on-job staff and workers came to 987.5 billion yuan, up 6.2 percent over 1999. This amount included 716.1 billion yuan for State-owned units; 96.3 billion yuan for collective units; and 175.2 billion yuan for other units.
The report also indicated that the reform of the wage system is pressing ahead steadily in the country's enterprises. By the end of 1999, 20 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and cities with independent plans had opened a wage guidance line on a trial basis; a system of collective consultation on wage was tried out in 1,700 enterprises; 35 large and medium-sized cities trial implemented a wage guidance pricing system in labor markets; 6,700 enterprise experimented with a manager annual salary system.
The report added that 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities have established a perfect minimal wage guarantee system and published the minimal wage standard.
