400,000 Chinese Benefit from Legal Aid System: Official

Since the end of 1996 when China first introduced the legal aid system, 400,000 people, including poor women, minors, handicaps, seniors and laid-off workers, have benefited from the government-paid programs, said Wednesday Duan Zhengkun, vice minister of justice.

"The legal aid system, which has played a positive role in ensuring social justice, demonstrates the Chinese government's efforts to safeguard the fundamental human rights of its citizens, " said Duan at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council.

By May 31, legal aid centers had been set up in 29 provinces and 1154 counties across the country, including the Legal Aid Center of the Ministry of Justice established in November, 1996.
