Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), arrived Slovenia this afternoon to start his official goodwill visit to the country.

In his written speech issued at the airport, Li said there exists traditional friendship between the two countries and the two peoples. After the independence of Slovenia, especially since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Slovenia in 1992, the friendship has grown further.

China is satisfied with the development of the bilateral relations, Li added.

He said the purpose of his current visit is to increase understanding, strengthen trust, promote friendship and deepen cooperation with Slovenia.

Upon his arrival, Li and his wife Zhu Lin were greeted by Slovenian National Assembly Chairman Janez Bodobnik.

Among those present at the airport were other high-ranking Slovenian officials and Chinese Ambassadorto Slovenia Wu Wenjun.

Jiang Chunyun, vice-chairman of the Chinese NPC Standing Committee, and other members of Li's entourage also arrived aboard the same plane.

During his visit to Slovenia, Li is scheduled to have talks with Slovenian National Assembly Chairman Janez Bodobnik, President Milan Kucan and Prime Minister Andrej Bajuk.

Li is on a six-nation tour, which has taken him to Yugoslavia and will also carry him to Croatia, Slovakia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
