Habitat of Black Storks Discovered in Northern Shaanxi

Two nestlings dropping out of the nest has led to the discovery of a habitat of black storks in the northern part of this northwest China Province.

A farmer in Caihe Village, Yaoxian County, came across the baby birds in a riverside and reported to the local wild animal protection department.

Experts from the provincial wild animal research institute rushed to the spot and confirmed the long-bill, long-leg birds are black storks, a wild animal in the state first-class protection list.

This is the first time black storks are found in Shaanxi since 1956, said the experts, adding that black storks are migrant birds which live in northeast and north China, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Gansu Province.

Local villagers said that black storks came to this northern Shaanxi village only two years ago. There are about 20 coming there this year.

Experts found that the cliffs by the Juhe River near the Caihe Village are the habitat for black storks.
