Taiwan Issue Cannot Follow German or Korean Model, FM SpokesmanThe Taiwan question is totally different from the German or Korean issue and can only be resolved within the one-China framework, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said Tuesday afternoon.Addressing a regular press conference, Zhu said: "The question of Taiwan is purely an internal affair of China. It is completely different, both in terms of root causes and nature, from the German or the Korean question, so they cannot be put on a par." Zhu noted that the Taiwan question is one left over from China' s civil war and to find a solution to the Taiwan question is China 's internal affairs. He also pointed out that it is universally recognized by the international community that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inseparable part of the Chinese territory. The government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of China, he said. "It is exactly on this basis that most of the countries in the world have established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China," he said. The spokesman stressed that although the two sides across the Taiwan Straits are yet to be reunited, the territory and sovereignty remain undivided and they are still one China. It is totally different from the fact that the former East Germany and West Germany were, and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea are, all sovereign states universally recognized by the international community, he noted. Zhu stated that the question of Taiwan can only be resolved with in the one-China framework. "The Chinese government has all along adhered to the 'one China' principle and always opposed applying the German or Korean approach to resolving the Taiwan question," he said. The purpose of the Taiwan authorities in applying the German model or the Korean model to handling cross-strait relations is to resist reunification, he indicated. "We hope that the Taiwan authorities will have a clear understanding of the situation, give up their separatist standpoints, and accept the 'one China' principle in explicit terms and as soon as possible," he said. |
