China Concerned About Situation In South Pacific

China is concerned about the situation in the Solomon Islands and Fiji, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said Tuesday.

He told a press conference that China hopes all parties concerned in the Solomon Islands will work together to normalize and stabilize the situation as soon as possible through dialog and consultations.

"We also hope that all parties concerned in Fiji will work together to seek a proper solution, in order to normalize and stabilize the situation as soon as possible," he said.

There are Chinese emigrants in the two countries, Zhu said, adding that the situation of hundreds of Chinese emigrants in the Solomon Islands has been very dangerous since a military coup took place there on June 7.

The Chinese government pays close attention to their demand of evacuating from the islands, and the Chinese foreign ministry has set up an emergency group and tried to do everything to help them evacuate from the islands, including seeking help from other countries, he said. He added that till now, some of them have evacuated from the islands, and the work of evacuating the rest is proceeding smoothly.

The Chinese government will also do everything possible to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in Fiji, Zhu said.
