Shanghai-EU Trade Surges

According to statistics from Shanghai customhouse, from January to April this year, the total value of Shanghai's import and export trade with the EU reached US$2.76 billion, up 62.5 percent over the same period last year (the same below), 17.5 percent of the city's total value of external trade. Export exceeded US$1.2 billion, up 69.5 percent; import topped US$1.54 billion, up 57.5 percent. These figures show a good momentum of the sustained growth of the import and export trade between Shanghai and EU.

The import trade between Shanghai and the EU from January to April this year was based mainly on ordinary trade. Processing trade held a dominant position in Shanghai's export to the EU, while among its exports to the EU, its volume of trade with Germany ranked first among various EU countries. Between January and April, Shanghai's import and export trade with Germany was nearly US$1.08 billion, up 47.2 percent, accounting for 39 percent of Shanghai's trade with the EU.

With the development of extensive ties and exchanges with the EU in recent years, Shanghai has established sister-city ties with 12 cities, including Italy's Milan, the Netherlands' Rotterdam, Germany's Hamburg, France's Marseilles, Sweden's Gothenburg, and Spain's Barcelona. Significant progress has been achieved in the technological and cultural exchanges and trade relations between Shanghai and the EU.
