Defense Minister Meets Botswana President

Defense Minister Chi Haotian met Tuesday with visiting President Festus Mogae of Botswana.

Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said that China and Botswana have enjoyed smooth development in political, economic, military and cultural fields since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 25 years ago.

He said that frequent exchange of visits between senior officers of the two armies has promoted mutual understanding and traditional friendship.

Strengthening the friendly relations between the two armed forces conforms to the fundamental interest of the two peoples, and benefits regional peace, stability and development, he added.

Chi said that the Chinese side is ready to work with the Botswana side to promote Sino-Botswana state and military relations in all fields.

Mogae agreed with Chi's view on bilateral relations. He said that Botswana-China friendship has been established on the basis of mutual support and sympathy.

He said that his visit, which happened at the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic ties between the two countries, is to promote the existing friendly cooperation between China and Botswana in all fields including the military field.
