China Applying Satellites in Its Western Development

China will apply satellites including China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS) to provide information services for the development of its western region.

These satellites will mainly be used to monitor local land resources, calamities, and the ecological environment, according to Guan Haiyan, director of the remote sensing center of Shaanxi Province, northwest China.

The application of satellites will produce economic benefits and meanwhile promote social development in western China, he said at a recent meeting on information technology and the development of western China.

Besides CBERS, China will also use satellites launched by other countries including the United States, France, Canada, Russia, India and Israel for this purpose.

China is planning to launch a series of small satellites dedicated to monitoring resources and the ecological environment in western China, the official said.

China has decided to develop its resources-rich but underdeveloped vast western region for overall national socioeconomic growth.
