British Orchestra to Perform in China

Britain's Southampton Youth Orchestra (SYO) plans to perform at the Century Theater in Beijing, performance organizers announced Tuesday.

At a proposed concert on July 29, the SYO will play for Beijing audience with four masterpieces of well-known western musicians, the Century Performance Corporation said.

The corporation also said that it will invite a Chinese young musician to cooperate with the orchestra for playing a piano concerto.

Founded in 1965, the SYO is regarded as one of Britain's leading youth orchestras. Its members are selected annually by audition, and many join the Orchestra after having participated in related training groups.

Under the baton of Keith Smith since 1979, the orchestra has been invited to perform at international festivals, on television and radio, and giving concerts in the presence of the Queen and other members of the British Royal Family.
