Chinese Employee Exceed Seven Hundred Million

As informed from the Year Statistical Bulletin of 1999 on Labor and Social Security released today, China's employment continue to grow, and the employment structure has been further improved. By the end of last year, the total employees reach 705.86 million people, increasing by 6.29 million than last year.

The employees in the first industry reach 353.64 million, covering 50.1% of the employed, and those in the second industry number 162.35 million, accounting for 23%, while 189.87 million people, or 26.9% of the total are in the tertiary industry. Those working in cities and towns add up to 210.14 million, increasing by 3.36 million, of which, non-laid-off staffs of various work units reach 117.73 million, decreasing by 5.63 million as compared to last year. By the end of 1999, the national registered unemployment rate is 3.1%. The actual number of laid-off employees in state-owned enterprises (excluding those in Tibet) are 9.37 million, increasing by 0.6 million as against that by the end of last year. Out of that 95% are registered in the reemployment service center, and 94.4% of those in the center signed the agreements on basic life guarantee and reemployment.

This bulletin has also made public the situation of social security and wage allocation of last year. By the end of 1999, 95.02 million employees and 29.84 million retired participated in the network of basic social pension insurance. Among them, 88.59 million employees and 28.64 million retired are from enterprises, a respective increase by 4.5% and 5%. The total number of those participating in unemployment insurance hit 98.52 million, rising by 24.3%. The average national wage is 8346 yuan, rising by 11.6%, the actual rise after deducting price factor is 13.1%. There are 6700 enterprises in experimentation of entrepreneur annual salary.
