FM Spokesman: China "Welcomes and Supports" Inter-Korean Summit

China "welcomes and supports" the first-ever inter-Korean summit in more than 50 years, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said in Beijing Tuesday.

Addressing a regular press conference, Zhu said China hopes that the summit would achieve positive results, so as to contribute to the further improvement of relations between the two sides of the Korean Peninsula, and the peace and stability there.

The summit is "a major event" in the development of the situation in the peninsula, and should be considered as "a good thing", he added.

He pointed out that the two sides of the peninsula are the " main parties" involved in the unification process. As a close neighbor of the peninsula, China has always supported the two sides to enhance mutual trust and improve relations through contacts and dialogue under the precondition of no outside interference, and achieve self-determined and peaceful unification through dialogue and consultation.

"China will continue to play its constructive role for the maintenance of peace and stability in the peninsula," he added. He stressed that China's policy and attitude toward the Korean issue are only aimed at maintaining peace and stability in the peninsula. China supports any move that facilitates peace and stability there.
