Rail Transportation Market Thrives

Up to June 11, the railway daily loading capacity exceeded 80,000 carriages in five successive days. This situation is rarely seen that transportation thrives in slack seasons.

Wu Qiang, deputy director of Transportation Bureau under the Ministry of Railways, told the journalist during an interview that China's railway transportation market has flourished since the beginning of this year. Between January and May, the conversion rotation volume of passenger and cargo transportation totaled 742.17 billion tons/km, up 6.9 percent over the same period last year. The total income hit 44.99 billion yuan, up 8.8 percent. This indicates a faster operation of the Chinese national economy.

From January to May, the total volume of railway cargo transported amounted to 673 million tons, up 4.1 percent over the same period last year. In May, the average daily loading capacity reached 7,903 carriages, breaking the highest record in history. Passenger transport capacity hit 440 million person-time, up 7.6 percent.

In the first five months, the freight volume of coal increased by 5.2 million tons, petrol by nearly 1.08 million tons, metals by nearly 7.42 million tons, grain by nearly 10.53 million tons, and timber by 555,000 tons. The volumes of fertilizers, pesticide, chemicals and cement all increased by different ranges, this development indicates the production and consumption of bulk materials have augmented. The situation of under-capacity operation is turned for the better.

Wu analyzed that a good sign of the strategy for the large-scale development of the western region has been seen in railway transportation.
