Japan Hopes for "Good Achievements" From Inter-Korean SummitWelcoming a "smooth" start as South Korean President Kim Dae-jung arrived in Pyongyang for the first-ever inter-Korean summit, Japan on Tuesday expressed the hope that the three-day summit would yield "good achievements.""We welcome the warm and highest-class welcoming ceremony. And the visit got off to a smooth start," Japanese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ryuichiro Yamazaki told reporters. Yamazaki was referring to the appearance of Kim Jong Il, leader of DPRK, at the airport to greet the South Korean president. "We hope for good achievements through the series of summit meetings," the spokesman said. Kim Dae-jung arrived in Pyongyang earlier in the day for the historic inter-Korean summit, the first ever since the division of the Korean Peninsula in 1945.
