Xinjiang To Be China's Major Oil, Gas Production Base

Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in west China has worked out an ambitious plan to develop the country's largest oil and gas production base within five years, according to Tuesday's China Petroleum News.

The paper cited Zhang Handong, deputy director of development and planning commission of the region, as saying that Xinjiang will undertake major readjustment in its industrial structure, focusing on petroleum, agriculture, tourism and other industrial sectors characteristic of local conditions.

The launching of the country's project "sending gas from west to east" will help Xinjiang move towards the target of becoming the country's largest oil and gas production base, Zhang said.

Xinjiang has been carrying out a strategy to tap its huge resources, including oil and gas, to stimulate the region's economic development.

Petroleum, petrochemical, textile and food industries are pillar industries of Xinjiang. They account for about two thirds of the region's total industrial output values.
