Arsenic Might Cure Liver Cancer: Expert

Chinese expert recently found that the virulent arsenic might be a good medicine for liver cancer if used properly.

Liu Lianxin, doctor with Harbin Medical Sciences University ( HMSU) in northmost Heilongjiang province, announced to have found that arsenic will kill cells of liver cancer.

In his experiments, Liu observed liver cancer cells in arsenic environment of different density and found that arsenic with light density will induce the death of cells. He further found that the arsenic in fact cause changes on a kind of enzyme, which mainly account for the death of cancer cells.

The find brought impact to the medical circle immediately. Jiang Hongchi, renowned expert on disease of liver and spleen, said Liu's experiment is first of its kind in the world and will provide an evidence on molecular level for developing arsenic into efficient medicine for liver cancer.

According to the practice of traditional Chinese medicine, small dose of arsenic can be used to cure rheumatoid arthritis, syphilis and psoriasis. Liu's achievements are believed as propeller for the development of traditional Chinese medicine.

Liu is currently trying to figure out an ideal dosage to prevent side-effect and make preparations for clinic use.

HMSU started to treat leukaemia by arsenic with positive results about 20 years ago.
