Liaoning Leads China in Urbanization

Liaoning province, China's traditional heavy industrial base, has begun to play a leading role in the country's urbanization, according to local sources.

The province has thirty-one large, medium, and small-sized cities, with an urban population of 16.45 million, accounting for 40 per cent of the province's total.

Statistics show that Liaoning has 3.8 cities per 10,000 square kilometer, compared with 1.4 a decade ago. The GDP of its urban areas amounts to 320 billion yuan, contributing nearly 90 per cent of the province's revenues.

Urbanization has helped revitalize the local economy and improve the people's living standard. Housing and income per capita increased by 25 per cent and 200 per cent, respectively.

Urbanization has greatly improved liquefied petroleum gas supplies, rubbish disposal systems, environmental protection and education.

Urbanization also has played a role in helping laid-off workers find jobs and in promoting the development of local industry and the service sector.
