Malaysia Considers Chechnya Issue as Russia's Internal Matter

Malaysia has always regarded the Chechnya conflict as Russia's domestic problem, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Monday.

Although Malaysia has always conveyed this view to the Russian leadership, it nevertheless wished to see the protracted conflict resolved through negotiations to put an end to the sufferings of the Chechens, he said when asked to comment on the request made by Chechen leader Aslan Maskhadov to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad to mediate in getting Russia and Chechnya to start negotiations to end the conflict in Chechnya.

"We wish to thank the Chechen leader for his confidence on us and at the same time, we will not stop speaking up on the need to respect Russia's sovereignty," he told reporters after meeting his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Dy Nien.
