China Maintains Independent Foreign Policy of Peace: Li Peng

Chinese top legislator Li Peng said Monday that China maintained an independent foreign policy of peace and is willing to establish friendly relations and cooperation with all the other countries including Yugoslavia.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), who is on an official goodwill visit here, made the remarks at a welcoming banquet held here Sunday evening. Li said China is willing to work with all other countries to establish a peaceful, stable, just and rational new political and economic order.

Although mankind is on the threshold of the 21st century, the international community is still facing the major tasks -- peace and development, which have not been fulfilled yet, Li said.

He said that after suffering U.S.-led NATO air attack last year, the Yugoslav people have defied power politics and pressure, worked hard and made marked achievement in healing the war wounds. The Chinese people are delighted to see this, he added.

The banquet was hosted jointly by Milomir Minic, chairman of the Chamber of Citizens, and Srdja Bozovic, Chairman of the Chamber of Republics, of the Federa Assembly of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

Speaking on behalf of the hosts, Minic said that thanks to the vision and far-sightedness of the laders of the two countries, Yugoslavia and China have maintained friendship and cooperation and their relations ahve been experiencing a new upsurge.

Minic said that his country supports China's efforts for national reunification and is delighted to see the smooth return of Hong Kong in 1997 and Macao in 1999. The Taiwan issue will certainly be solved and China will surely realize its complete reunification.

While staying in Yugoslavia, Li will hold talks with top leaders of the eastern European country.

Li Peng is on a six-nation tour which will also take him to Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.
