China Urges Cultural Advancement in Western Region

China's Ministry of Culture recently urged localities to do more for promoting cultural advancement in the country's western region.

The ministry will provide special funds for constructing cultural facilities in rural areas, such as libraries, museums, movie theaters and cultural centers, our daily reported Monday.

Meanwhile, the ministry plans to organize well-known writers and artists to plunge themselves to the thick of life in the west, the newspaper said.

The writers and artists are asked to create more excellent works for describing the real lives of the western region. The ministry warns of damage of cultural relics during the economic development in the region.

All the local heritage administrations are called on to make comprehensive arrangements for well maintaining treasured relics and cultural ruins in the western region, especially the areas mainly populated by ethnic minorities, the newspaper said.

The State Administration of Cultural Heritage this year will focus on excavation projects in the Three Gorges areas and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the newspaper said.
