Electronic Check System Put to Use at Nanjing Customs

A container-used auto identification check system called "electric customs officer" has been to put to use lately at Xinshengyu Customs in Nanjin, Jiangsu Province.

In recent years, China's foreign trade imports, including some electromechanical products, chemicals and other high-valued goods, have soared rapidly for container transport. Take Xinshengyu Customs as an example, imports by containers last year made up one tenth of total shipments to a value taking 60% of total imports.

But checking into container's contents is not only time-consuming but also involves various impossibilities. According to rules set by the General Customs Administration, 10% of check into containers is regarded as in compliance with requirements, so how about the remaining 90% of containers, and how to prevent tariff evasion and smuggling cases from happening has become a hard nut for all customs.

It is reported that the electronic check system will be used together with X ray scanners. If some suspected goods are found by X ray, the "secrets" in containers will be clearly seen in a short while. With the help of this system, customs officers can say farewell to traditional toilsome examination methods.
