Large Relics Smuggling Case Uncovered in China

Customs officials in the city of Zhangjiagang in east China's Jiangsu Province recently seized 142 items of relics hidden in 60 pieces of furniture which were bound for the United States.

Customs sources said this is the largest relics smuggling case uncovered in Jiangsu in the past 20 years.

The relics include ceramic plates, portraits of Buddha, brush pots and folding screens.

Local archeologists believe these relics were mostly made in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and 10 items are on China's list of relics prohibited to leave the country.
