Chinese Police Cracks Ring in Illegal Macaque Trading

Police in central China's Henan Province have cracked a ring charged with illegally trading 2,168 macaques, a wild animal protected by the State.

The six-member ring have involved in 55 cases of macaque-trading in 1998 and 1999 alone, according to the five suspects arrested.

The police intercepted a mini-bus carrying 99 macaques early this year after receiving a report. They arrested three ring members in the bus and discovered a notebook which kept a track of every trade of the macaque by the ring.

So far, the five suspects have been handed over to the local procuratorate for public prosecution while the sixth suspect at large has been put on a wanted list.
