Ancient Epitaph in Khitan Characters Discovered in North China

Chinese archaeologists recently found two ancient epitaphs written in characters created by the Khitan, a minority living in north China some 1,500 years ago.

The epitaphs were discovered in an imperial tomb located in Bairin Youqi in southeastern part of north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The Khitan characters were created during the Liao Dynasty (916- 1125). They were abolished in 1191 by a new ruler in the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234). Few books written in Khitan characters are extant today.
