Chinese Government Envoy Leaves for Funeral of Assad
State Councilor Ismail Amat, as special envoy of the Chinese Government, left here today to attend the funeral of late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad.
Assad, who was elected president of Syria in March 1971 and re- elected in 1978, 1985, 1992 and 1999 to serve a seven-year term, died of a heart attack Saturday.
