No. 2 Subway Line Opens to Traffic in ShanghaiThe No. 2 subway line in Shanghai, China's largest economic and financial center, officially opened to traffic on June 11.Costing a total of 12.3 billion yuan (about US$1.5 billion), the new 16.3-km line runs through west-east Shanghai. Compared with the north-south No. 1 line in the city, the No. 2 line is equipped with more and advanced facilities such as special lifts for the handicapped, guiding facilities for the blind, and toilets at the subway entrance. Integrated Circuit (IC) cards are used in toll-collecting in the new subway line. The No. 1 and No. 2 subway lines, together with a light rail line circling the city, form a basic transportation network in Shanghai. The city plans to have more than 470 kilometers of modern rail transportation system in about another 20 years.
