100 Killed in Fighting Between Uganda, Rwanda in CongoFighting between Ugandan and Rwandan forces on Friday killed 100 and wounded 700 civilians in Kisangani, a northeast city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the New Vision Daily report Saturday.Bodies littered in the streets of the city with people unable to collect them for burial as both armies pounded each other with heavy artillery and small arms. "The situation is extremely bad," Alexandre Liebeskind of the International Committee of the Red Cross was quoted as saying. The fighting resumed Friday morning in Kisangani hours after the former allies had promised to halt four days of fighting. The fighting was less intense than earlier in the week but, with mortar shells exploding on the city's street, very few civilians dared to venture out of their homes, the report said. The two former allies have their troops stationed in Kisangani of the DRC where they back rival rebel factions fighting the DRC President Laurent Kabila, and have clashed frequently in recent weeks. At least 15 ceasefires have been agreed on, but immediately ignored this week, and U.N. military officials estimate the city has been rocked by as many as 6,000 artillery rounds, said the report. |
